KO WAI MĀTOU? (Who are we?)

Huia Hair began with one simple question I asked myself in front of the mirror:
“Why am I hiding my curls?”

For years, I straightened my hair every week, believing that sleek and flat meant “professional” or “put together.” But one day, staring at my big, thick, wavy-curly hair, I realised I was dimming my own light to fit someone else’s standard of beauty. That moment changed everything.

I decided to embrace my natural hair and step into my truth. Like many wāhine, I quickly discovered how hard it was to find affordable, local products and tools that actually worked for curly, wavy, and coily hair. That struggle sparked the idea for Huia Hair.

What started with sourcing one simple, curl-friendly brush has now grown into a kaupapa (purpose) a Māori-owned, whānau-led business dedicated to providing quality hair tools and curl care products that celebrate our natural textures, instead of hiding them.

Huia Hair is for:

• Anyone starting their natural hair journey.

• Māmā who want to care for their tamariki’s curls without the tears and tangles.

• Curly heads everywhere who deserve products made with aroha (love), manaaki (care), and understanding.

Our dream is bigger than just hair. We are here to empower our people to love their natural beauty, to feel proud of who they are, and to have access to products that make that journey easier.
